How do you translate “play” to Japanese?

Hi, I’m Junko. I’ve been teaching Japanese for 18 years in Hong Kong.
Today, I’d like to tell you that “Play” is not “あそぶ”. I will explain how to translate “play” to Japanese correctly.

play: Many Japanese learners translate this word to あそぶ、あそびます。遊ぶ

Junko: きのう何をしましたか。 What did you do yesterday?

Student: わたしは テニスであそびました。 I played tennis.

This answer is not correct.

1. play sport

サッカーをします。I play football.
テニスをします。   I play tennis.
ラグビーをします。I play rugby.
ゴルフをします。   I play golf.

*We use します for play in this case.

2. play music 

ピアノをひきます。弾きます。 I play the piano.
ギターをひきます。弾きます。 I play the guitar.
* We use ひきます・弾きます for the strings such as piano, guitar, bass and violin. 

フルートをふきます。吹きます   I play the flute.
トランペットをふきます。吹きます   I play the trumpet.
クラリネットをふきます。吹きます   I play the clarinet.
* We use ふきます・吹きます for the brass instruments or the woodwind instruments.

ドラムをたたきます。叩きます            I play the drums.
ティンパニーをたたきます。叩きます I play the timpani.
* We use たたきます・叩きます for the percussion instruments.

3. play games, video games, board games, chess 

We simply say します。
ゲームをします。
ビデオゲームをします。I play video games.
プレステをします。       I play Play Station.
ボードゲームをします。I play board games.
チェスをします。           I play chess.

4. Then when do Japanese people あそびます?

こどもたちは公園であそんでいます。 Children are playing in the park.
こどもたちはレゴであそんでいます。 Children are playing with Lego.
わたしのむすめはうちで友達とあそんでいます。My daughter is playing with her friends home.
あした大阪へ遊びに行きます。    I’m going to Osaka tomorrow for fun.

5. Japanese people often say 遊ぶ、遊びに行く for hanging out

明日友達と新宿に遊びに行く。I’m hanging out with my mates for Shinjuku tomorrow.
明日友達と出かける。 I’m hanging out with my mates tomorrow.
