Press ▶ and listen. This is the real audio from the pack.

Red lines are what you say. Green lines are what you will hear from staff. Most phrase lists only teach the red ones.

Ink illustration: a frog waiter welcomes a rabbit and a monkey into a restaurant

Scene 1 · Lesson 8 · The restaurant

The door opens. Someone shouts at you.

Don't worry. It means "Welcome!" and you don't need to answer. Next, they will ask how many people. Now you know what to say.

  • You'll hear
Irasshaimase! · Welcome! (no need to answer)
  • You'll hear
Nanmei-sama desu ka? · How many people?
  • You say
    Futari desu · Two people.
Ink illustration: a frog clerk at a convenience store asks a rabbit customer a question

Scene 2 · Lesson 10 · The konbini

You put a bento on the counter. The clerk asks a question.

Heat it up? A bag? Chopsticks? You hear the same quick questions every time. After this lesson, you will understand all of them.

  • You'll hear
Atatamemasu ka? · Shall I heat it up?
  • You'll hear
Ohashi wa otsuke shimasu ka? · Do you need chopsticks?
  • You say
Daijoubu desu · I'm OK. / No, thank you.
Ink illustration: a rabbit and a frog traveler wait at a country bus stop

Scene 3 · Lesson 5 · The station

Is this the right train? Just ask.

One short question can save you an hour on the wrong line. And when the doors start to close, you will know what the announcement means.

  • You say
Kono densha wa Kyouto ni ikimasu ka? · Does this train go to Kyoto?
  • You'll hear
Doa ga shimarimasu · The doors are closing.

Every lesson starts with a scene like these, drawn in the style of Japan's famous Chōjū-giga animal scrolls.
