Hi, I’m Junko. I’ve been teaching Japanese for 18 years in Hong Kong.
Today, I’d like to talk about some Japanese words, that express the meaning of “many”. Some of my students make similar mistakes repeatedly. Therefore I want to address this topic today. Let’s get started.
I think you already learned 「多い おおい」「たくさん」「いっぱい」.
Do you use these words correctly? Here are some minor grammatical adjustments for clarity and flow:
Usage１: 名詞が多いです。
公園は人が多いです。
There are many people in the park.
日本でどこが一番人が多いですか？
What city in Japan has the most population?
毎日屋は新しい魚が多いです。
There are lots of fresh seafood sold in Mainichiya.
I picked up example sentences from みんなの日本語
*The word of 多いです/おおいです just describe “there are many sth/sbody.” Then we simply say like…
１．人が多いです。
２．雨が多いです。
３．車が多いです。
４．問題が多いです。
５．仕事が多いです。
However we usually say the topic first before the above sentences. It means we have to clearly show what we are talking about first of all.
１．香港は人が多いです。 There are lots of people in Hong Kong.
２．６月は雨が多いです。 June has many rainy days.
３．タイはどこでも車が多いです。 There are lots of cars everywhere in Thailand.
４．この会社は問題が多いです。 There are lots of issues in this company.
５．今日は仕事が多いです。 Today I have a lot of work to do.
Point: 多い is adjective and followed by です、でした、かった。
Usage2: たくさん＋あります・います・動詞 Unit 9
香港は人がたくさんいます。(same meaning as No.1)
６月は雨がたくさんふります。(It rains a lot in June. No.2)
この会社はたくさん問題があります。(same as No.4)
今日は仕事がたくさんあります。(same meaning as No.5)
*たくさん is an adverb, so it always accompanies a verb in the sentence. I’ll give you more examples:
１．きのうたくさん食べました。
２．京都はたくさんの寺があります。(たくさんの寺）
３．明日は試験ですから、たくさん勉強しました。
４．彼女は子どもがたくさんいます。
Can you guess the meaning?
Usage 3 いっぱい：this is interchangable with おおい・たくさん
１．きのういっぱい食べました。(I ate a lot yesterday.)
２．京都はお寺がいっぱいあります。＝京都はお寺がいっぱいです。
(There are a lot of temples in Kyoto.)
３．明日は試験ですから、いっぱい勉強しました。
(I studied a lot because I have an exam tomorrow.)
４．香港は人がいっぱいいます。＝香港は人がいっぱいです。
(There are many people in Hong Kong.)
５．６月は雨がいっぱい降ります。
(It rains a lot in June.)
６．タイはどこでも車がいっぱいです。
There are a lot of cars everywhere in Thailand.
